Things didn't look good for the German Army in late 1944. The allies had advanced as far as the West Wall and had taken back most of the conquests of the Blitzkrieg. Although the Montgomery's plan to end the war, Operation Market Garden, had failed there was still a palpable sense that the Allies were on the verge of a major victory. With things not looking good on the Eastern front either, Hitler decided to make one last gamble and attempt to cut off a significant portion of the Allied army. Throwing in what remained of his feared Panzer divisions and his last reserves, he drove through Belgium to Antwerp in what would be called Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein (translated as Operation The Guard on the Rhine or Operation Watch on the Rhine).

At first it looked as though Hitler’s plan had a chance of succeeding. Early in the operation the advance was reminiscent of the Blitzkrieg across Europe early in the war. Although undersupplied and under trained, US troops still fought valiantly and in many spots offered pockets of stiff resistance which despite the rapid German advance. The German advance was quick, but as the days wore on, the advance out-paced its own supply and stockpiles began to run low. The situation was made worse with poor roads throughout the Ardennes and difficult winter weather. Almost as quickly as the attack had started, the advance ground to a halt.

To add insult to injury, the 101st Airborne earned the nickname the “battered bastards of Bastogne” by putting up a unrelenting defense for this strategic point while vastly outnumbered and surrounded by heavily armored German forces. Refusing to back down, they prevented the Germans from occupying the important Belgium crossroads town and scored a major strategic and psychological victory for the Allies. Later, as the weather cleared, Allied air support was able to decimate German supply columns and advancing armor. This bought enough time for Patton’s armor and other reinforcements to arrive and begin the long slow reduction of the Bulge the Germans had created in the Allied line.

Now in this classic top down real time tactical simulation, you take command of either US or German forces to retrace these fateful days of the war. Attempt to turn the tide of the impending Allied victory or desperately defend Bastogne while riding to the rescue with General Patton’s 3rd Army. Starshatter - The Gathering Storm

The enemies you will face in Starshatter's dynamic campaign won't just be targets. Enemy ships and fleet admirals use the same AI algorithms as your own wingmates and commanders. They are trying to win the war just as much as you are. This means that with every kill you make, you are directly contributing to the war effort.

Starshatter supports mouse, keyboard, joystick, throttle, and gamepad flight controls simultaneously, so that you can find the control method that works best for you. You can easily assign any joystick or gamepad axis to any function you wish, and each axis (including the mouse Y-axis) can be inverted to suit your preferences.

In the arcade flight model, the joystick is configured as in a typical space combat simulation, with the stick controlling pitch and yaw and the twist axis controlling roll. In the standard flight model, the joystick is configured as in a high-end airplane simulation. The stick controls pitch and roll, while the rudder pedals or twist axis controls yaw. At any time, in any flight model, you can swap the roll and yaw inputs by pressing the "J" key.

Under normal circumstances, the mouse is used to control the user interface and to manipulate the interactive HUD. When using the third-person exterior view, the mouse is also used to control the camera and to select targets and issue orders to allies, just as in a space-based RTS game. You can right-click on any friendly unit in the chain of command to access a context-sensitive orders menu. You can also use the mouse to fly your ship and fire your weapons. By pressing the "~" key, you toggle the mouse between selection mode and flight mode. In flight mode, the mouse works much like the "mouselook" control in an FPS game. You steer the ship by moving the mouse in the direction you want to go. Fire guns with the left button and missiles with the right button. Tap the middle button to select a target, and use the mouse wheel to control your speed. If you prefer, you can also configure the mouse to work as a "virtual joystick." In this mode, the distance of the mouse cursor from the center of the screen controls how fast your ship will turn, instead of how far it will turn. Some people may prefer the "virtual joystick" mode for dogfighting because it requires less repositioning of the mouse than the "mouselook" mode.

Flight Model

Starshatter includes three different flight models so that you can enjoy the space combat experience in the way that is most effective for you.

By default, Starshatter is configured for the "standard" Newtonian flight model. In this flight model, all ships have both linear and angular momentum or inertia. There is no drag in space, so if you cut your engines to zero you will keep going at your current speed indefinitely. Your onboard flight computer will tryto keep your velocity pointed in the same direction as your nose, but you can turn off this behavior by pressing "M" for manual mode. In manual space flight mode, you can fly sideways or backwards to your heart's content.

In the standard flight model, airborne combat is quite similar to what you will find in a good jet combat simulation. Your fighter will fly just like an airplane, with lift, drag, gravity, angle of attack, and atmospheric density to contend with. You have very limited rudder authority, and you have to perform banked turns at corner velocity to stay in the fight. In the arcade flight model, Starshatter is much more like what you may be used to from playing other space combat simulations. Your ship always flies in the direction you are facing, and your throttle setting controls your speed instead of your acceleration. If you cut your throttle to zero, your ship will slow to a stop even in space. You can perform flat turns in atmosphere, and you don't have to worry about drag or stalls. Gravity is still modeled, and you do still have to worry about running out of fuel and slamming into that big hard thing called "the ground." Starshatter even includes a "relaxed" flight model that is between these two extremes. The relaxed model is similar to the standard model except that drag applies even in space. This helps keep your velocity under control, and makes it easier to turn.One way or another, you should have no problem finding a flight model that works for you. Now get out there and start getting us some kills!

Space Combat

Starshatter brings space combat up to date by using a combat model inspired by modern day surface navy and naval-aviation technology, instead of the more common World War II era technology. Each of the different components of the space force has a distinct role to play in battle, and this specialization must guide your strategy in deploying your forces.

Fighters are small, agile, single-seat space craft that are capable of both atmospheric and orbital combat. In Starshatter, fighters play several important roles. Because of their speed and maneuverability, fighters are often used for scouting and recon jobs. They are used as an anti-air defensive platform to shoot down enemy fighters and strike craft that are attacking the fleet. And they are used as strike craft that can project force from orbit down to attacking ground targets.

In order to accomplish these dual missions in different environments, fighters need to give something up. Fighters are too small to support shield generators or artificial gravity systems, and they carry fuel and life support for only limited duration mission profiles.

One solid hit from an anti-air missile is often enough to finish a fighter pilot's career. Fighters use active decoy countermeasures to evade incoming missiles. The fighter's job is to hit the target quickly and decisively and get out in one piece. Fighters are not capable of long range flight between planets or even from a planet to it's closest moons.

Starships are big, bulky, slow, and powerful, and they are the only ships capable of making the faster-than-light quantum leap between the stars. Starships are designed for long range missions, and carry enough power to run graviational deflector shields, artificial gravity systems, and the quantum drive. As a result, they are too big and un-aerodynamic to land on planets. Starships are limited to the cold, hard vacuum of orbit.

World in Flames

World In Flames is Matrix Games’ computer version of Australian Design Group’s classic board game.

Covering both the European and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II, World in Flames is global in scope while simulating each branch of service in detail. Land units are corps and army level, supplemented with specialized divisions. Naval units include individual counters for every carrier, battleship, cruiser, and light cruiser in the war. Air units represent groups of 250 to 500 airplanes displayed on screen using 1000+ unique bitmapped images.

With 6000+ unique units, 250+ countries, and a global map of 70,200 hexes, World in Flames is the premier World War II grand strategy game.

All 11 scenarios from World in Flames Final Edition are included and they range from the small 5 turn Barbarossa offensive in Russia and the 5 turn Guadalcanal battle in the Pacific, through to the 36 turn Global War campaign which spans all of Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Atlantic, and the Pacific.

This simulation models national production from conveying raw resources over rail and sea lines to factories for the manufacturing infantry, armor, naval, and air combat units. Because oil was so important during World War II, there are separate optional rules for synthetic oil plants and deployment of oil reserves to the front lines.

Game units are represented in both armies and corps, aircraft carriers, naval task forces, and the air groups that took part. Everything you need to re-fight the greatest conflict in history.

Two to six players make the strategic decisions that decide the fate of nations. What forces to produce, where to commit them, when and how? No two games of World in Flames play the same, no strategy is foolproof, any decision may have unforeseen, long-term consequences.

    World War 1 has come and gone and the world has settled into an uneasy peace. Fearful of the growing strength of Japan, the United States created a series of plans in case of a pacific war with Japan. Their name: War Plan Orange.

    Eight Scenarios, 2 campaigns with three variants each, and two smaller scenarios.

    A Historically accurate Air OOB, with over 74 different aircraft types, including wheel and float variants of several different aircraft.

    A historically accurate Naval OOB, with over 311 historic Japanese, American, British, French, Canadian, Australian, Dutch, Chinese, and even Siamese ship classes.

    A Full ship OOB, including every ship of every class modeled that existed in the 1920’s, regardless of whether or not the ships are in any of the scenarios.

    A Comprehensive Land OOB, from French forces in Indo China to the activation order of US Infantry Divisions.

    Every army weapon used by any of the armies of the time are modeled, from the US Army 4 inch Mortar Mark I to the British 60 pound Gun Mk II, to the Japanese 24cm Type 45 Field Gun.

    Early and experimental tank models are available, from the French built FT-17 to the US M1921 Medium tank.

    Historically accurate graphic depictions of ships, including refits and modernizations.

    A challenging AI that provides a tough, fun game.

    An even better PBEM game, accurately reflecting problems faced by 1920’s War Planners.

    No Production System! While War in the Pacific’s production system is retained, it is not used by any of the default scenarios, allowing new players to jump right in playing as the Japanese.

    Accurate Aircraft squadrons, based on World War I and 1920’s documents depicting probable deployments and strengths, as well as historic deployments where possible.

    War Plan Orange provides an accurate representation of the problems facing naval planners in the 1920’s, and is a good representation of the forces available to each nation.

    Open campaigns! In the PBEM variants of the large campaigns, victory points are equal starting out, allowing various scenarios to be played. China, Indo China, the Philippines, anything is possible, with no bottlenecks to restrict players. The AI campaigns do simulate a war based on the real plan; in PBEM players can “Go Wild”.

    “Never were ships!” War Plan Orange features several classes of ships that never saw the light of day, including the Tosa, Kii, and South Dakota class battleships (both a sixteen inch gun and a Tillman inspired 18 inch gun version), and Amagi, Lexington, and G3 class battle cruisers.

    In addition, pre-dreadnought battleships, victims of mass scrapings in the 1920’s, may now have the chance to do what was never granted them and fight for the title of “Kings of the Sea”.
